Title: Gravitational wave detection motivated numerical relativity
Speaker: Dr. CAO Zhoujian, Institute of Applied Mathematics, CAS
Abstract:
Along with the improvement of astronomy observations in accuracy and scale respects, general relativity plays more and more important role in astrophysics. Gravitational wave is one of the most important theoretical predictions of general relativity. Thanks to the techniques improvement of laser interferometer gravitational wave observatory (LIGO) and the data accumulating of pulsar timing, people expect to realize the first direct detection of gravitational wave in the following 5 to 10 years. After that, we will see a brand new gravitational wave astronomy comes which uses gravitational wave to observe our universe. To both the signal detection and the parameters estimate needed in gravitational wave astronomy, accurate theoretical model for gravitational wave source is quite important. Solving Einstein equations numerically is a key tool for theoretical study of gravitational wave source, especially for sources without any symmetry. Due to the complexity of Einstein equations, how to solve Einstein equations stably, accurately and efficiently with supercomputer has become an individual research topic. In this talk, I will present the motivation for numerical relativity coming from gravitational wave detection, numerical relativity's development and its main difficulties. After that I will talk about the numerical relativity code construction in academy of mathematics and systems science, CAS. Followed that, some applications of the code to gravitational wave source modeling will be addressed.
Biog:Dr. Cao is an associate researcher in Institute of Applied Mathematics, CAS. He is now leading the only one numerical relativity group in Mainland China.
