Abstract:
One of the key science goals common to many of the planned next-generation large telescopes is to understand how galaxies assembled over time to give rise those seen in the present-day Universe. I briefly review the standard model of galaxy formation, and select two observationally-driven problems with the standard model that serve to highlight the key physics we need to address to properly understand how massive galaxies formed. Recent theoretical work to address these problems suggests that (many) massive galaxies at high redshifts formed in a manner very different to that predicted in the standard model. This talk is aimed especially at students and non-experts interested in but have little knowledge of the field of galaxy formation.
