Title : Low Surface Brightness Galaxies - their morphological classes and disk evolution

Speaker: Prof. Mousumi Das (Indian Institute of Astrophysics)

  Time: 3pm, September 7 (Thursday)

  Location: Lecture Hall, 3rd floor

  Abstract:

Low surface brightness (LSB) galaxies are gas rich, low luminosity disk galaxies that are characterised by their large dark matter masses and low density stellar disks. They are the one of the best laboratories to study the effect of halo mass on disk evolution in our nearby universe. In this talk i will discuss the different subclasses of LSB galaxies - spirals, dwarfs, irregulars and what it tells us about their origin. I will also present observations and simulations of bars in LSB galaxies, to show how how disk surface density affects the evolution in these galaxies
